February=5 months out…eek!

Wow, I really havn’t blogged in quite some time. It was pretty busy through January, I am a teacher so final projects and exams have came and gone, as have many January birthdays…..Mr.D and myself have January birthdays as does our best man and one of our groomsmen! After a whirlwind January it is finally February….and what I believe is time to get cracking on this wedding business (it is only FIVE months away, yikes).

Things I have accomplished…..flowers, antique shopping, invitation woes SOLVED! (yay), my veil is in and needs to be picked up, the boys have purchased their suits, and I have made appointments to meet with people (caterer etc.)

Our stag & doe is coming up next month, for those blog readers who might not be familiar with this term it is essentially a dance thrown in honour of the bride & groom. People purchase tickets to come to the dance, buy their alchohol, play games, win prizes…..all in attempts to raise some funds for the future Mr. & Mrs. I know it is not so common in large cities, alot of my Torontonian friends had never heard of them, however we live ina very small town and here, it is the thing to do! They are quite fun to attend so here is hoping they are just as fun when it is your own! There is quite a bit of planning to do for it, all easy stuff though since it is a pretty laid back event.

As far as flowers go, we are going to be displaying our reception flowers in antique silverplate creamers, sugar bowls, teapots etc…..to accomplish this look it meant that Mama J (MOB) and I had to start antiquing!! We have only been to one antique market so far but we need to get out there looking some more in the near future! We were able to find ALL these items and purchased them all for around $130.00. I was thrilled!

OK so clearly they need to be cleaned up and polished up a bit….they are a work in progress. Hey maybe my wedding party will join me for a day of polishing….hint hint.

On our antique adventure I also found these (below) and fell in love. I have plans of hanging them from the trees at our outdoor ceremony site ( Elsie Perrin Williams Estate). Some think it is bizarre, Mr.D and I think it is super cool! I just need to clean them up a bit, which wil be difficult because I don’t want to chip off the paint that still remains.

As far as the flowers to go in the silverplate beauties, I love the flowers in these pictures and am going for the same look. I am in love with peonies, which for my July 17th wedding may not be possible, however I would be just as happy with very full garden roses (Juliet Garden rose….aka the peony rose). The Dress Experience

Dress shopping. If you are not yet engaged, married, or are and havn’t gone dress shopping I am sure you have this lovely, exciting picture in your head. You know the picture- trying on that first white beauty and walking out of the dressing room to stand in front of a big mirror, your mom is gushing and oohing and aahing, and you can’t beleive that you are actually standing there, trying on wedding dresses! Yes, well, this is the image that I too had in my mind. Let’s just say, it did not quite turn out to be as wonderful an experience as I had hoped and was very thankful that my only audience was my mom. As it turns out many wedding dress samples are size 2′s, size 6′s, and size 20′s- of which I am none! This was beyond frustrating. I would really like a dress, go to try it on and only be able to get it partially on, or I would be totally swimming in it. Frustration Station. It was so hard to know which dress actually looked nice. What turned out to be somewhat frustrating and not as fun as I had envisioned ended up in me finally finding a dress…..not the dress I had dreamed of…….not the dress I had imagined at all. In the end I found the perfect dress for me. I can’t wait for it to arrive and be able to try on a dress in MY size!!

Where did we go dress shopping? First we went to Nicholas & Elizabeth in London, I tried on a bunch of dresses, and found one that I really, REALLY loved. First time out. Not wanting to jump the gun, I decided to go to Mississauga with my mom to look at some more shops. We went to Brides & Beyond and Pearl Bridal House. Brides & Beyond was honestly annoying, there were way too many people in a small area and way too many strangers giving their oppinions. While some people might appreciate that, if you know me at all you know that it is something that I do not. Anyway, I didn’t find any that I LOVED so we moved on to Pearl. Pearl, Pearl, Pearl….most beautiful bridal salon. So cute and little and intimate. I tried on dresses that I did indeed love, they were beautiful, however they were also 8,000 dollars which was not what I was willing to spend on a dress for one day. If that’s your thing, by all means, they are stunning, but it just wasn’t going to fit my budget. While driving home from Mississauga I couldn’t stop thinking about the Nicholas & Elizabeth dress and told my mom that I wanted to drive straigh there and buy it. We picked up MOH D and BM E enroute and I went to purchase my dress! She’s on order and I can’t wait to meet her.

I am not going to show her to you, but I will show what she is not. The following are images of what I pictured myself in for my wedding day, but alas…..I didn’t end up with it, I wanted lace from head to toe, yet the dress I fell for does not have a stitch of the stuff on it!

Invitation Woes.

Wow. Time really DOES fly when you’re having fun! I have been having the time of my life just being engaged and living in our new home, not to mention planning lessons and teaching! It has been a riot. My teaching job is coming to an end February 1st, I can only hope that I get another LTO (it’s like a maternity leave coverage for those who don’t “get” teacher talk) however, if I don’t I will at least have supply teaching! Anyway- This blog is certainly not about teaching. Today I have been conversing back and forth with an invitation designer, I found a design I like online (I am not going to post an image because the only image of it is in a colour I really do not like) and we’ve been chatting back and forth for a while. Today I decided that I needed to just get it dealt with. So, I think I will be ordering our wedding invitations from Tulaloo, a cute little stationary company with a cute little etsy shop! Buuuut indecisive me is still sitting on it, trying to decide whether I really like it. Much like I have with everything, I am horrible. I have myself convinced that I do not like my shoes, or my jewellery, at one point I convinced myself that my dress was ugly- which it most certainly is not! I am hands down the most indecisive person I know, because well- what if there is something out there that I will love more, and then it will be too late……anyway enough rambling about indecisiveness. So yes, invitations are slowly but surely being figured out (it has been my biggest headache yet as I had originally wanted letterpress but in a richbride/poorbride invitation scenario, letterpress is definately richbride…..me, I am more middleoftheroadbride. So alas, the quest to find romantic/vintage looking invitations that were not letterpress has been my battle for quite some time now.

Sorry, this post is boring……I have nothing to show you, and I realize now this is all just a big ramble of boredom and avoidance of marking my students’ work. Meh, I am going to publish it anyway.

Next job on my list: decide which wedding band to go with this puppy…..I keep putting it off because the only Tacori dealer in our area is a 50 minute drive to west London in Hyde Park. Will update when decision/indecision is made.

Whirlwind Christmas!

Wow! What a rush that was! It all happened so fast and after much build up it is over Mr. D and I had a wonderful Christmas with our families and Santa visited us too (turns out we were good this year). We hope that you all had a great Christmas and will have a healthy and happy new year! It is hard to believe that the new year is nearly upon us! It will clearly be a very exciting year for us and our friends! One of my dearest friends had a baby the end of November so we will get to watch him grow (albeit from a distance since they live in North Bay) which is very exciting, we will be planning one of my dear friends weddings, and of course Mr. D and I will have many events to share with our closest friends and family ranging from the stag and doe to the showers, the rehearsal night and our actual wedding. We are very excited to be having a small wedding which will allow us to give those who are part of our day to day lives all of our attention on one of the most cherished days of our life together (mushy mushy- that’s me!).

Tonight might be one of my most favourite Christmases of all (next to yours of course Mom!)….it is the day of the Girly Christmas! This is when I get to spend one solid night in the company of my favourite girls in the whole world! Although, a few significant members will not be in attendance tonight we will be thinking of them as some of them had prior engagements and Miss E is moving in with the love of her life today!

Anyway, this post is pretty unrelated to our wedding….but I wanted to wish everyone a Happy Holiday even though I am in between Christmas and New Years.

Venue Love

I was pleasantly surprised while perousing my photographers blog the other day when I opened up the website only to see a beautiful but simple wedding shot at Elsie Perrin Williams Estate! OUR VENUE! The photos were stunning and had the vintage vibe we are going for, I have seen many photos from weddings at this venue that have been so overdone that the natural beauty of the antique building are not able to shine through! This couple left the house bare bones and simply added flowers, which is what Mike and I intend on doing. It looks perfect- check it out!

We had them taken at a random farm that Yaira has asked permission to use- it was a magical magical place complete with broken down yellow school buses. The teacher in me was ecstatic! We also had some done at a broken down abandoned barn at the side of the road that was surrounded by corn fields. I love them, so I will stop talking and let them start speaking for themselves, without further ado………….

Despite not wanting to have a sit down dinner, Mr. D and I wanted to feed our guests- we do love them afterall and want their bellies to be full and the beverages to be plentiful! So, as mentioned in previous posts we are opting for a Cocktail Style reception (!!!). This means that we will get married surrounded by our friends and family at 6:30 to be followed by the cocktail reception which will include all sorts of passed hors d’oeuvre, 2 food stations with chefs at each preparing fresh food (my favourite part) and passed desserts. We will also have the infamous MIDNIGHT SNACK (okay, okay we all know that THIS is truly my favourite part)! We haven’t finalized our menu items yet, that is a task for the new year. A Picture Says a Thousand Words

The most important thing is being able to marry your best friend, the love of your life in front of all the people who mean the world to you. Both of us will be doing this on July 17th, 2010. The second most important thing for both of us, hands down, is photography. Myself having gone to University for Fine Art History and Mike being a photographic amateaur (he is getting quite good) needed to have our day shot in the most intimate and artistic way possible. After seeing our friend’s (Mr & Mrs F) engagement session and perusing the blog online we knew The Last Forty Percent Photography was our best bet. After meeting with the lovely B who is the mastermind of the whole operation, we immediately booked with them and cancelled all other photography appointments we had scheduled. If we had nothing else, we would have great photography.

Mother nature ruined our first planned engagement session. I was heartbroken. However, when the day came for our shoot I was for once thankful for her uproar because the leaves were even more vibrant than they were a couple weeks before. We had our much anticipated e-session with our lovely photographer, and let me tell you she was wonderful! We had such a blast and it was a lovely morning. Just as the spanish beauty was packing up her camera the thunder clouds rolled in and the cold wet drops began! The weather that morning couldn’t have been more in our favour!

Going to the Chapel….wait, no we aren’t!

We had been throwing around various ideas for our wedding before we were even engaged. We had originally been thinking that we would get married at The Elmhurst Inn in Ingersoll, and also looked into various locations in London over the Internet to have the wedding and reception. One thing we knew was that we wanted to have a one-stop wedding (meaning, we wanted to have the ceremony and reception in the same location). We wanted this for a few different reasons 1) It would be convenient for us. We I didn’t want to be trucking around to various locations throughout the day (hair, make-up, venue will be enough for me)! 2) It would be very convenient for our guests to not have to drive to different locations as well. 3) Neither one of us cared to get married in a church.

After toying around with the idea of a sit down ballroom type wedding, we realized that it just wasn’t us- we LOVE food and wanted to put a personal spin on things so we opted to do something a bit different and have a cocktail style affair! When we made an appointment to go visit Elsie Perrin Williams Estate we instantly knew it was where we wanted to get married. Mr. D is a sucker for ANYTHING old and rustic and I loooove vintage romance/vintage ANYTHING. So Elsie Perrin Williams Estate in London, Ontario it would be.

The plan (provided Mother Nature does not repeat the same horrible attitude she had this past July) is to have the wedding outside on the grass with the beautiful trees as a backdrop, and have the Cocktail Reception inside/outside. Although the Estate is ours for the whole day, we will begin the ceremony at 6:30 and cocktails/delicious delicious fare will follow.

Although I knew that a proposal was in the near future ( we had discussed it, picked the ring out together etc) I hadn’t a clue when it would happen, to my dismay. Anyone who knows me knows that I do not like surprises. I like to know everything, HAVE to know everything. Well, Mr. D would not allow this to be the case.

We had been dating for 5 years to the day, and I had worked the entire day. Mr. D and I had planned to have a special dinner and maybe go out with some friends. I came home from work to an extremely happy Mr. D making pizza in our kitchen. Pizza that he had literally slaved over all day. He went to various grocers to find all the perfect ingredients and he even made the sauce!! What a guy! There were flowers and wine awaiting me. We had a nice dinner and chatted about my day at work and his day of running around London. Once finished dinner Mr. D requested that I help him in the kitchen to make dessert. I didn’t feel like it. I was quite content sipping on my wine and nibbling on leftover pizza crust. He had the ring in the kitchen and I had totally kiboshed his plan. So as I set there eating my pizza crust, Mr. D is suddenly on his knee at my side. Despite knowing that the proposal was coming soon, I did not know it would be this day and was totally thrown off (I was still chewing my pizza). He told me he loved me and asked me to be his wife. I said yes (duh!). We eventually had dessert and spent the night celebrating at Moxie’s with my parents, my brother and my non-biological brother BVS.

So, that is how it all went down……finally I can start blogging about wedding details!!!
